Resource-Based Learning

In earlier grades, as students are just beginning to learn how to record their information in jot note form, it is sometimes helpful to get them to work from a photocopy of a text page. They can highlight keywords on the page and then write a jot note from the keywords.

Jot Note Process

1. READ to the first punctuation mark

2. THINK - Do I need this information?

3. THINK - Where do I put this information?

4. THINK - What do I write?

5. WRITE following the jot note rules

Jot Note Rules

1. No complete sentences.

2. Write keywords and enough information to make sense.

3. Begin each note on a new line.

4. Begin each note with a dash.

5. Spelling must be perfect.

Students need lots of practice at this skill and can record jot notes in an organizer, concept map, web, or on cards or paper. Encourage them to make their notes with an appropriate heading or question at the beginning to help them organize.
