Country Culture Report Grade 8

Curriculum Connections - Social Studies Culture Unit

This assignment (view in HTML) was a culminating activity that showcased students information literacy skills as well as their understanding of the patterns that make up a culture.

Prior to the research, students had been exposed to information and activities about culture. Potential resources were introduced in the library and on the Internet. Skimming and scanning techniques and jot note rules were quickly reviewed. Students chose a country that they were interested in and began a search for possible resources. In some cases, their initial choice changed when they found insufficient material.

Students were encouraged to collect information about each of the cultural patterns on separate pieces of paper with the pattern's heading at the top. Several students found it easier to work from photocopied pages using a highlighter and making jot notes from that.
