Resource-Based Learning

"Literate people are those who have learned how to learn." Patricia S. Breivik

Planning is essential. It is a definite asset to be able to collaboratively plan, facilitate and evaluate a resource-based unit with a Teacher-Librarian.

What Teachers and Teacher-Librarians Do Prior to Working with Students...

  • Provide a reason for students to gather information by developing a question or problem, based on a curriculum topic. Take into account students' prior knowledge and consider how to make it relevant and meaningful to them.
  • Outline instructional objectives.
  • Identify which information literacy skills need to be addressed throughout the information inquiry process.
  • Become aware of potential resources and make sure they are appropriate for the students' needs (reading, viewing, listening levels)
  • Determine how students will demonstrate their learning. Students may have some choice in this.
  • Decide how information will be collected and the time frame for each step of the process.
  • Consider how to evaluate both the process and the presentation.

What Students Do...

How do I do it? What does it look like? How do I assess? How can I learn more? What is it?
