Resource Based Learning

"We must help students develop the thinking skills not only to locate but also
to evaluate and use information." Jacqueline Mancall

What Do Teachers and Teacher-Librarians Do While Working With Students?

  • Present the question or problem. Help students to ascertain what they already know and what they need to find out. Brainstorm and make lists, webs or concept maps.
  • Provide a way for students to record their information, possibly in a "research organizer".
  • Assist them in locating resources that will be appropriate for their task.
  • Through mini-lessons, jigsaw and individual instruction, teach the information literacy skills that students will need to be successful users of information.
  • Monitor student progress at predetermined checkpoints.
  • Involve students in evaluating their own progress.
