The Information Processing Cycle

The basic IP cycle as outlined by Saskatchewan Learning includes the stages of input, process, output and distribution.

Depending on the context, the cycle you would follow may include additional steps or may be missing some steps. More information may be found online on sites such as everything2.com, or do an online search for "information processing cycle". Adding the names of some steps might help narrow the search, but could also leave out useful sites that use different terms.

 



IP Cycle

Example Application: If you wanted to put posters up around town because your dog is missing, you would need to:

INPUT: Type up a description of your dog, and insert a photo that you uploaded or scanned.

PROCESS: Edit the poster to make sure it is accurate, and to attract people's attention (eg. Make the word "LOST" in large letters at the top, centre the description under the photo, and put your contact information in bold at the very bottom.

OUTPUT: Print the copies that you need.

DISTRIBUTE: Armed with tape, a stapler, and your posters, hit the streets. Good luck!

TASK 1: Compare a model of the Information Processing Cycle found online to the one given here. Explain the similarities and differences.

TASK 2: How would the information cycle apply if you were to collect the favourite quotes of your classmates to be published in a class newsletter? Illustrate this with a labelled diagram.

BONUS: This task involves an additional step to the cycle, which could be called "acquisition". Where would this fit into the cycle?
