Information Processing for Managers

The purpose of this module is to provide opportunities to explore the managerial roles, responsibilities, procedures and methods that are necessary for the efficient management of common information processing activities. Students will find it useful to reflect on their own roles and skills levels as information managers while engaged in these activities.

IMPORTANT

Students intending to complete this module should begin by briefly browsing through all the pages to get an overview. One thing that should become apparent from this is that certain tasks, such as observing a meeting, will require advanced planning to get the necessary permission. Many suitable meetings are held on a monthly basis, so do not wait until the last minute.

Module Overview (suggested progression)

1 - Review the information processing cycle

2 - Interview someone in the community who works in a managerial position. Focus on their roles and responsibilities, and changes that have occurred in their job due to technology. Compare the data obtained from interviewing different people.

3 - Review Employability Skills (online) and Occupational Health and Safety Standards (online)

4 - Carry out a small project involving the collection and processing of information. This could include a community phone/email directory, a directory of all environmental groups and organizations involved in the region, a list of grants available for youth projects, an environmental analysis of their community and/or school, a directory of the schools in the division, along with SRC and sports team information, a cookbook, or other suitable project.

UNIT PROJECT OVERVIEW

Students are given the opportunity to observe meetings and practice skills such as recording minutes.

Students gain experience in organizing a meeting or conference.

Social Action Immersion Model: Students choose either a cultural focus or an environmental focus, and then apply and develop their managerial skills to a project that can be accomplished within the timeframes required. This might be done within the course itself depending on time availability, or as an extension or extra-curricular activity.

An example guide for a culturally-focused project and an environmentally-focused project are included in this module.
