Extended Project: Sustainability Model
Overview
Students plan, organize and carry out an environmental service project in the community. This may be an independently-run project or a partnership with an existing community-based organization such as the
Craik Sustainable Living Project.
Beginning the Project
Step 1 |
|
A plan is made about what students want to accomplish from the experience. What can they learn and achieve? What will come out of this? Advanced planning and thought is needed. Create a proposal that will inform not only your own school administration, but also other possible partners such as local service groups or funding organizations.
Step 2
Research potential projects. You may know of existing projects, but search for information to create a list of all potential projects. This may include projects that already exist but could benefit from youth participation, or needs within the school or community that are not being met.
Step 3
Contact possible partners, from school SRC to town council. Refer to your proposal to explain what you are interested in doing. Begin by explaining the basic idea, a possible itinerary, and other details. Establish a timeframe that would work for both of you.
Step 4
Make arrangements for local resource people to either visit the class, or for members of the class to attend relevant meetings outside of class time. If the project requires funding, be sure to put in proposals well in advance.
During the Experience
In addition to carrying out the service project, decide ahead of time some of the information that the group wants to collect, and how to collect it.
After the Experience
Students are to use their information processing skills to go through their information and create follow-up reports, including their reflections on their learning.
