In a Minute

Review with students the purpose of minutes generated from meetings, or have them do a quick online review of meeting minutes. Example resource sites are Effective Meetings.com and Meeting Wizard.org.

Online Search Suggestion: "meeting minutes " + "how to"

Using minutes obtained from meetings that students attended, compare the notes taken by students to those recorded as the official minutes.

PRACTICE Strategy

1 - Pick out key ideas from given sentences

2 - Pick out key ideas from paragraphs

3 - Pick out key ideas from a conversation (could be from a recorded speech)

ASSIGNMENT

Given an audio or video recording of part of a meeting, students demonstrate their ability to record minutes of a meeting. Appropriate preparation would be to be able to refer to at least one official set of minutes from a previous meeting.

Keyboarding skills may be assessed during this activity.

Note: To obtain the recording needed for the above assignment, assign the task of making the audio or video recording to a student. A related task to develop keyboarding skills would be to make a typed transcript of the meeting from this recording, and divide the keyboarding task amongst the students involved.
