Cleaning Computer Components

The most important regular maintenance for computers and their components is cleaning. Besides reducing the spread of germs, properly cleaning computer components will extend the life of the computer and help it run with fewer problems.

Computers components, such as those listed below, need to be cleaned on a regular basis, depending on usage and the environment. A single person with no pets may only need to clean the computer 2-3 times a year. Computers in a school lab, on the other hand, should be cleaned monthly at least, and some components should be checked and wiped down weekly or daily.

ASSIGNMENT

Conduct an internet search for information on cleaning each of the listed computer components. Use this information to make an instructional file card, poster or PowerPoint slide, including pictures or diagrams. Include a flip side or second slide that provides warnings or other cautions to follow when cleaning, to protect both the computer and the user's safety. An example showing cleaning of the interior of the case is shown below.

QUESTION:

Why is it not recommended to use a regular vacuum cleaner to clean inside a computer?

Cleaning the interior of the computer tower

NOTE: The cases of different computers open in different ways. Some require a screwdriver while others snap off.

Canned, pressurized air is often recommended for cleaning the dust out of computer towers. A good alternative is a small shop-vac that can both blow and suck, available from most home building supply stores for about $40.

Clean in a well-ventilated area, using the intake connector to grab the big dust bunnies, and then the blower to really move the dust. Go over all exposed surfaces, being careful not to to touch and damage any internal circuitry.

Although it is known as a dust bunny, it looks more like an expired mouse.

Interesting facts: A major component of dust bunnies is dead skin cells, the source of food for some species of dust mites. The feces of dust mites and their bodies are a major cause of allergies. You don't even want to know about dust mites and pillows, so be warned if you get tempted to search for information on the internet.
