Activity 1 - Scanning for a Low-resolution Application
1. Search online to find examples of items that have been scanned. An example web site with this focus is FOBO.
2. Scan a print photograph that you have taken or have permission to use or a drawing that you have created yourself. Use an appropriate resolution for displaying on a monitor.
3. Save the image, cropping or optimizing as needed
4. Place the image into your application (e.g. web page, PowerPoint, blog entry, etc).

- Contributing to Wikipedia
Look at the following examples of Wikipedia articles with book cover images: "Hatchet" and "A Long Way Gone".
- Look at the image sizes used by right clicking the image and selecting the 'Properties' option. The images size is given in bytes, and the dimensions are given in pixels x pixels. In Wikipedia, you can also view image information by clicking on the image. Use these cover images and others as a guideline for how large your image should be.
People who have submitted images to Wikipedia have either created the images themselves, have obtained the necessary permissions to submit someone else's image, or are using an image in a way that members of Wikipedia consider to be "fair use". Often, book covers have been scanned, resized and uploaded to accompany an article.
To learn how this is done, read through Wikipedia's instructions on how to edit articles and specifically, how to upload images to Wikipedia. Uploading an image requires submitting information about the image as well, including "fair use rationale".
- Another useful resource is WikiProject: novels, which provides guidelines for creating consistent articles on novels. The template Infobox book is a useful tool for not only adding a cover image but other important information about the book as well.
-
- TIP: To see what was entered in order for an image to be displayed in an article, select the edit tab near the top of the screen when viewing an articles such as "Hatchet" and "A Long Way Gone".

- It is recommended that contributors sign in to Wikipedia first, which requires entering a username and password. At the time of the creation of this resource, no more than 6 Wikipedia accounts could be created from a single IP address within a 24 hour period, which may limit this activity in a school setting as all the computers in your school may use a single IP address. Once the accounts are made though, multiple users can be on at the same time.

| Level 1 |
Assignment is incomplete or done incorrectly. |
| Level 2 |
A document has been scanned, and the resulting image can be viewed at an appropriate size in an application without scaling the image up or down. Although it is adequate, there is some room for improvement in the cropping, image quality or the positioning of the image. |
| Level 3 |
A document has been scanned, and the resulting image is clear, properly positioned, cropped appropriately, and can be viewed at an appropriate size in an application without scaling the image up or down. |
