Formal language is used with people you don't know. Often these calls are calls made to request assistance with something. It is important to be clear about what information you need. If it is a call in which you will be required to provide information, be sure that you are prepared BEFORE you place the call.
Listen to this example of good form on the phone.
This is a formal request for information.
Talk on the phone is similar to writing letters or communicating with someone in person. You use different language in different situations.
There is nothing more annoying for the busy person at the other end to have to wait while you sort through information you should have gathered before making
the call.
Listen to this example of a formal complaint.
Remember:
1. Identify yourself
2. Identify the purpose of your call
3. Provide the necessary details
4. Thank the person assisting you.
5. Use a polite and courteous formal language.
