Setbacks and Roadblocks

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall."

There is a positive and negative side to everything.

That is why there is a need for balance in our lives.

So how do we create balance in goal setting and planning?

The first thing is to recognize that working towards our goals is a journey like any other.

You can always expect the unexpected.

You are also bound to experience negative events along the way.
You can't have a goal without accepting the challenges and obstacles that come with it.
Be prepared for these setback and roadblocks so that you can make the best of any situation.
Creating emergency or back up plans can save time, frustration, and needless worry.

Using your own goal write up your Plan for Setbacks and Roadblocks.

Here is an example:
My Goal is to travel to Saskatoon.

What could possibly go wrong?
-flat tire, break down, accident, etc.

How will I handle this? What is my backup plans?

Check the internet for weather updates and forecasts.

Phone the department of highways to see if there is any construction, accidents, or poor road conditions.

Leave early to allow for the unknown.

Fill the gas and oil in the truck.

Make sure the spare tire is ok and all the tools for changing a tire are in the truck.

Make sure emergency supplies are in the truck in case I get stuck in the ditch.

Have extra supplies just in case I have to help somebody else.

Pack a good book in case I have to wait.

Make sure cell phone is charged in case I have to call for help.

Phone home when I get there to tell them I made it.

My Goal is__________________

What could possibly go wrong?

How will I handle this?

From then on, the compass knows only one point-its ideal.
And it will faithfully guide you there through the darkest nights and fiercest storms."

Checkpoints

My favourite part of taking a trip is taking a break. Stopping for a snack, a nature walk or just checking out the map is an opportunity to see different people or places. Taking the time to check up on your goals is enjoyable as well. It provides you with a break and a chance to actually see the progress you have made. The reward in reaching goals is not just found at the end. True satisfaction comes from growing and surviving during the journey.

If you are not accomplishing what you want consider trying different strategies or a new ways to motivate yourself. You may even find that you have outgrown your goals due to major changes in your life. In that case step back to look at the "big picture" again. You may find that simply revising your goals creates the positive change that you needed. Remember your life is an ongoing cycle and your goals are not set in stone.

Take the time to celebrate your progress. It will give you the energy needed to make daily tasks seem easier and less work.

- Charles F. Kettering

Worries and Doubts

From time to time you will be discouraged. Be prepared for these times.

  • Create a binder full of your past accomplishments. You can include pictures, certificates, transcripts, awards, letters, cards, thank-you notes, cards of congratulations, reference letters, notes from others, etc. When you start having the "blues" whip it out and enjoy all your accomplishments over again.
  • Rent an inspirational movie based on a true event that highlights the struggles of another. It is helpful to see a person in another time and place who overcame their fears to reach their goals. Top 20 Inspirational Movies
  • Spend time with a motivated individual who has many daily obstacles to overcome. Learn how they deal with each one they encounter.
  • Spend some time mentoring or tutoring an person who needs help. Their gratitude and thanks will give you the ego boost you need.
  • Talk to anybody about your situation. You will be surprised how much you have in common with another person. They may even offer suggestions you never thought of before.
  • Make a video/CD/audiotape of friends and family members each giving you advice, jokes, and encouragement. Humour does wonders for the soul. It allows you to not take yourself too seriously.
  • Review your "reward system" it may not be rewarding enough. It should suit the goal. Sometimes you need to give yourself extra treats as rewards to get out of a slump.
  • In your purse or wallet keep a couple cards of your most important goals. Look at them all the time and keep updating them.
  • Make yourself a "Goals emergency coupon book." Include a couple of "Goal Free Days."
  • Spend time playing with children, their energy, enthusiasm, and optimism will rub off. It also gives you an excuse to let your inner child come out and be silly which can do wonders.
  • Remember progress is not always steady there will be highs and lows. Be persistent and never ever give up no matter what.

when you take your eyes off your goals." -Anonymous

Learning from the Negative....

Setbacks and roadblocks present you with an opportunity for learning. They allow you to learn more about yourself. People experience many factors that affect their decisions everyday. Knowing yourself well can allow you to make the best decisions possible.

  • Keep a journal as a guide to mark your progress and to learn about your strengths and weaknesses.
  • For example if you know that at certain times of the month you do not feel 100% plan around those times.
  • Know your busy days and slow days so you don't overload or under load yourself.
  • Find out when you learn the best in the morning, midday, or at night.
  • Figure out when you make the best decisions.
  • Decide what strategies can activate your mind.
  • If your goal is to lose weight have a plan in place to deal with the daily "cravings."
Remember prevention is the best medicine.
  • Look at the various aspects in your life to decide your peak times and low times: socially, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
  • When you make mistakes correct them as soon as possible. Learn from your errors and move forward. Remember to only give yourself constructive criticism.
  • Always congratulate yourself for each success. Giving yourself credit builds your confidence.
  • Make up a list of quotes or mottos that you can use to replace any feelings of doubt, anxiety cynicism, or tiredness. Start by using the ones below.

Walk the walk and talk the talk.

Don't look back and don't look down....look forward.
