2.4 Painting Tools

Your set department should have a variety of rollers, paint brushes and tools on hand. If all are stored properly they will last a long time.

Brushes should be stored hanging vertically to maintain the bristles. Rollers should be left to dry standing vertically and then stored in a dry place. Paint trays are rinsed after each use and can be stacked.

Your tools should include scrapers, pain can openers and mixing sticks. You may also have a mixer that can be attached to an electric drill. Have plenty of newspaper on hand or drop cloths to use on the stage when painting. A variety of sponges and rags can be used in painting effects.

Painting Tools
From the set design, rough out designs in pencil directly on the flat. Do this after applying a base coat of gesso and a base coat of paint. The base coat of paint should be the dominant colour in the scene. Sketch other detail and build up the painting in layers. Refer to the diagram in Flats to see an example of a painted flat.
