2.4 Cloth

Cloth is a great decorating tool on the stage. On suggested sets it can be used to create the illusion of a forest or water. Cloth can hide set pieces and be removed to reveal them later in the show. Cloth can be stapled and glued to frames or forms to make complicated textures while keeping everything light easy to move. Cloth can be painted to resemble anything and has a natural texture which picks up light and gives sets great depth or shadowy effects.

The above three photos demonstrate different treatments of acrylic paint on cloth to create some great rock effects. The rock can be reinforced with wood on the interior and built up with foam, wood or paper to create the desired shape. A base coat of paint is applied to the cloth and details are added until the desired effect is achieved. Use brushes, rags and sponges to apply paint in various ways.
