7.1 Planning Make-up for a Production

Make-up is used on the stage for several reasons and is an integral part of any production. That said, make-up needs must be planned for each actor in order for materials to be purchased well in advance of the show.

In the following Planning Make-up (swf) tutorial, you will learn how to create a Face Shape Schematic. This schematic is used to plan the make-up needs of each individual performer. Combined with the Character Make-up Planning Schedule, this line drawing of the actor is very useful. You can make many copies of the document and experiment with coloured pencil to illustrate make-up requirements for individual performers. There are spaces provided to record the materials, costs, notes and step-by-step instructions for the make-up artist. (In this case the make-up artist is you!)
Make-up Planning Schedule

Follow the steps in the Planning Make-up (swf) presentation to make a Face Shape Schematic of your own face and combine this with the Character Make-up Planning Schedule. Use pencil crayons to plan 3 different applications on three different sheets.
