8.3 Headsets
Headsets, or "Cans", can be a nightmare or a benefit to a stage production. The running crew use headsets to communicate with each other during the show. The Stage Manager will call the show over their headset. The following are a few things to remember and to look for in headsets.
Headsets are made up of an earphone, a microphone and a belt pack. Some systems require a base for communication, others communicate amongst themselves like walkie-talkies.
Batteries: Always be sure to have enough batteries on hand for the run of a show. Start shows with fresh batteries.
Charging: If you are using headsets with recharging base, return them to the base at the end of each show. If it's not on your head, its on the charger!
If your system has multiple channels, be sure to identify a channel for main communication.
Headsets can be quite delicate. Plastic zipper bags work well to keep headsets individualized when stored.
